Information we collect

When you create a reader account, we collect your name, email address and a password (stored as a salted hash — we never see or store it in plain text). When you subscribe to a newsletter, we collect the email address you provide and which list you signed up for. We also log basic technical data on every request — IP address, user agent and the page requested — for security and abuse prevention.

How we use it

Your account email lets you sign in and lets us contact you about your account. Newsletter subscriptions are used only to send the newsletter you signed up for — we don't sell or share subscriber lists with advertisers or other third parties. Technical logs are used to keep the site secure, rate-limit abuse, and understand which stories and sections are actually being read.

Cookies & analytics

We use a session cookie to keep you signed in to a reader account, and a separate one for the admin dashboard. Neither is used for advertising or cross-site tracking. If we run analytics or ad services in the future, this section will be updated before those cookies are set, not after.

Sharing your information

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only where the law requires it, to protect the rights and safety of Anecdoted and our readers, or with service providers who help us operate the site (email delivery, hosting) under an obligation to keep it confidential.

Third-party sources

Stories on Anecdoted are researched and written from public reporting, press releases and direct outreach to founders and investors. Where a story draws on another outlet's original reporting, that source is recorded internally for editorial accountability even where it isn't shown inline. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of outlets or companies we report on or link to.

Your rights

You can review and update your reader account details at any time, or ask us to delete your account and associated data. You can unsubscribe from any newsletter using the link in every email we send, no login required.

Data retention

We keep account data for as long as your account is active, and newsletter subscriptions until you unsubscribe. Technical logs are retained for a limited window for security purposes and then purged.

Children's privacy

Anecdoted is a business and startup news publication intended for a general adult audience, and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 16.

Changes to this policy

If we materially change how we collect or use your information, we'll update the date at the top of this page and, where the change is significant, notify registered readers by email.
