Activate Capital has joined the Qatar Investment Authority's US$3 billion Fund of Funds programme and will open its first office outside the United States in Doha.
The growth equity firm backs companies building intelligent energy and infrastructure technology, writing cheques from Series B through to the pre-IPO stage. QIA's commitment is intended to push that strategy further into the Global South, where Activate will concentrate on businesses in the middle of digitalisation and decarbonisation.
Where the money goes
Five areas define the mandate. Activate looks at energy and power generation; transport and mobility, both on land and in orbit; digital industry; supply chain resilience; and climate adaptation.
The Doha office will be run by senior investment professionals, among them a partner whose remit is Qatar specifically. The firm also plans to recruit Qatari and international staff for the team.
"Activate Capital brings deep sector expertise that further support our ambition to develop Qatar into a leading hub for innovation, entrepreneurship and long-term investment," said Dr Mohsin Pirzada, Head of Funds at QIA.
Anup Jacob, Co-Founder at Activate Capital, framed the tie-up around a shared bet on technology as the lever for rebuilding infrastructure systems worldwide.
"We share QIA's conviction that technology enabled solutions will play a critical role in transforming infrastructure systems globally," he said.
QIA's side of the deal
The sovereign wealth fund becomes a limited partner in Activate and takes a seat on the firm's Limited Partners Advisory Committee, giving it a formal channel into how the portfolio is managed.
QIA introduced the Fund of Funds programme in February 2024. Its stated purpose is to pull international venture capital firms into Qatar, open up channels for knowledge-sharing with the global VC industry, and accelerate the growth of startups in the country and across the region.
Activate is the latest firm to sign up. QIA said its concentration on climate, energy and industrial infrastructure widens the sector coverage the programme can offer, and lines up with Qatar National Vision 2030.
The office opening gives Activate a physical base in the Gulf for the first time. Its investment team has until now worked from the US, sourcing deals in energy and industrial technology that the firm expects to find more of as Gulf economies push to diversify.
