Standard Chartered Starts Institutional Bitcoin and Ether Spot Trading in UAE
Standard Chartered becomes the first global systemically important bank to add institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading in the UAE.

Standard Chartered has started offering institutional spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether to eligible clients in the UAE. The service runs through Standard Chartered DIFC and uses the bank's electronic trading channels, where clients can trade deliverable BTC/USD and ETH/USD. Only eligible institutional clients can use it. Standard Chartered is now the first global systemically important bank to offer this capability in the UAE, and the only global bank currently running an institutional digital asset spot trading service in the region.
The UAE offering previously centered on custody. Trading adds an execution layer to that regulated service. The trading function is embedded into the bank's existing platforms, so crypto-asset trades sit next to familiar foreign-exchange tools. Settlement can be completed through a custodian selected by the client. Standard Chartered's own digital asset custody service, which it launched in September 2024, can also handle settlement.
Rola Abu Manneh, the bank's chief executive for the UAE, the Middle East and Pakistan, pointed to the UAE's digital asset regulatory framework as a reason institutional participants can operate there. She described the expansion of Bitcoin and Ether spot trading as an important step in broadening the bank's regulated digital asset proposition in the country. By bringing execution together with custody, governance and the network of a large global bank, the product gives clients a more integrated way into digital asset markets, she said.
Christopher Parsons, senior executive officer at Standard Chartered DIFC, framed the launch as an example of DIFC's role as a regional platform for international finance. International banks can take global capabilities and put them to work from a regulated base in the centre, he said. Parsons added that Standard Chartered's markets expertise and network, paired with that base, allows the bank to serve clients across the Middle East region.
This is not Standard Chartered's first institutional spot trading launch. The bank introduced the same service through its UK branch in July 2025, becoming the first G-SIB to offer deliverable spot crypto trading to institutional clients. The UAE rollout takes that established capability into a market where the bank has been assembling its digital asset offering for institutions.
Inside its Corporate and Investment Bank, the broader digital assets strategy covers custody, trading and tokenization. The bank's ventures unit extends that work through Zodia Markets and Libeara. Those pieces have one underlying purpose: allowing institutional clients to take part in digital asset markets through regulated infrastructure and services.
