stc Bahrain and ila Bank have agreed a partnership that gives ila Bank cardholders a discount on rova, the telecom operator's travel eSIM app. The saving reaches 25% on destination data packs, and the size of the discount depends on the card a customer holds.
ila Bank Credit and Premium cardholders receive 25% off all rova destination data packs. Customers with Prepaid, Classic or alburaq Debit cards receive 15% off eSIM purchases made with their ila Bank card. Both rates are claimed by entering the promo code for the relevant card tier at checkout.
Packs sold by destination
rova sells mobile data packs built around individual destinations, so a traveller can arrange connectivity for the country they are visiting instead of buying a physical SIM after arrival. The discounted packs cover more than 35 countries. The app is open to stc subscribers and to people who use another operator at home, which means the offer is not confined to stc's own customers.
eSIMs differ from the cards that slot into a phone: they are provisioned digitally, so a plan can be installed and activated without a visit to a shop or an airport counter. That removes a step that has traditionally stood between landing somewhere and getting online.
What the companies say
Khalid Alia, chief digital and customer experience officer at stc Bahrain, said rova was designed to do away with the familiar frustrations of travelling with a phone, among them roaming charges that can outrun the rest of a trip's costs and the queue for a local SIM card after landing.
Abdulla Abuidrees, head of marketing and acquisitions at ila Bank, said travel forms part of daily life for many of the bank's customers, and that the tie-up with stc Bahrain and rova helps them stay connected abroad at a lower price.
Tying a bank card to travel data
The shape of the offer shows what each side gets. Card-linked discounts give a bank a reason to sit at the front of a customer's wallet, and travel is when spending is already concentrated: flights, hotels, insurance. A discount on data lands at the moment a customer is paying for a trip rather than in an abstract loyalty catalogue.
For stc Bahrain, rova gains a route into ila Bank's existing card base without asking anyone to change mobile operator. The eSIM market is young enough that distribution counts for as much as price, and a card statement is a cheaper way to reach travellers than advertising alone. For customers, the practical effect is narrow but concrete: the cost of staying online abroad can be settled before departure, at a rate set by the card they already carry.
