UAE Online Retail Reaches $11.5 Billion as E-Commerce Share Climbs

Online retail in the UAE was worth $11.5 billion (AED 42.2 billion) in 2025, more than double the $4.8 billion (AED 17.6 billion) recorded in 2020. That works out to average annual growth of 19% across the five years, a rise attributed to changing shopping habits, wider use of digital payments and improvements to delivery networks.

Online purchases accounted for about 15.7% of all retail sales in the country in 2025. That share is expected to pass 20% by 2030. Sales are projected to expand 9.9% a year from 2026 through 2030, taking the market to roughly $18.3 billion (AED 67.2 billion).

Crossing the 20% mark matters because it changes what physical retail is for. Once a fifth of spending moves online, stores increasingly function as showrooms and collection points, and the competitive question shifts to inventory placement, warehouse capacity and the cost of the final mile — the same areas where regional investment is already concentrated.

A regional market that more than doubled

The wider MENASA region followed a comparable path. E-commerce sales there stood at $63.2 billion (AED 232.1 billion) in 2020 and $141.4 billion (AED 519.2 billion) in 2025, more than doubling over the period. The market is projected to reach about $247.6 billion (AED 909.3 billion) by 2030.

That growth is expected to draw on heavier use of electronic payments, rising internet access and a larger pool of online shoppers, alongside continued investment in warehousing, fulfilment and delivery networks.

Infrastructure and policy

Mohsen Ahmad, chief executive of EZDubai Logistics Hub, said the UAE's position rests on its digital and transport infrastructure, government programs and advances in payment technology. He said the hub will keep providing market intelligence to companies working in the sector.

Apparel leads, appliances next

Apparel and footwear was the largest category for online sales in the UAE in 2025, reaching $3.1 billion (AED 11.4 billion). Consumer electronics and home care followed. Consumer appliances are expected to see notable expansion in the coming years, helped by greater household spending capacity, demand for higher-priced products and the routine replacement of home equipment.

Technology reshapes the buying journey

Artificial intelligence is playing a growing part in how online retailers interact with customers, particularly through tailored recommendations built on consumer data. Quick-commerce services are gaining traction, and last-mile delivery networks are changing what shoppers expect for how soon an order arrives. Social platforms are increasingly connected to the purchasing journey, while digital wallets and Buy Now Pay Later services give shoppers more ways to pay.
