UAE President Raises Flag at Qasr Al Hosn With 55 Achievers on 14th Flag Day

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan raised the UAE national flag at Qasr Al Hosn in Abu Dhabi on November 3, 2026, in a ceremony marking the country's 14th Flag Day. Fifty-five accomplished individuals from a range of sectors joined the President for the raising.

The figure was not incidental. There was one guest for each of the 55 years since the Union was founded in 1971, and the group was drawn from different fields so that it stood for the whole span rather than for a single institution. Their presence put faces to a number that would otherwise stay an abstraction.

In a post on X, Sheikh Mohamed said he was honoured to raise the flag at Qasr Al Hosn with 55 accomplished individuals representing 55 years of the Union. The occasion, he wrote, was a moment to reflect on the journey begun by the late Sheikh Zayed and his fellow Rulers. He said he looks with confidence to the people of the UAE, whose ambition and determination will drive progress and prosperity.

The ceremony anchored Flag Day events across the emirates. Residents, government bodies, businesses and schools were invited to hoist the flag together at 11am, so the day was marked in offices and classrooms at the same hour as in the capital. For a date built around a single object, the synchronised timing does most of the work.

Flag Day was introduced by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid in 2013. It commemorates the 2004 accession of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan as President, and it honours the flag itself — two meanings folded into one morning ceremony. The first is a date in a succession. The second is the symbol that outlasts it.

The day has become a fixture on the national calendar in the lead-up to Eid Al Etihad, which falls on December 2 and marks the Union's founding. Flag Day opens that run-in; a month later the Union itself is marked. Schools and government offices now treat the date as routine, which is roughly what a national occasion has to become if it is to hold its place.

Pairing 55 years with 55 individuals makes the anniversary a measure of what the country has produced, as much as of how long it has existed. A flag raised at 11am by schools and offices in the same hour is a modest ritual, and a cheap one. It is also one that asks residents to take part rather than watch, which is a different thing from a ceremony they read about afterwards.

Eid Al Etihad follows on December 2, when the Union turns 55 and the calendar's attention shifts from the flag to the founding it represents.
