Abu Dhabi Fintech Mal Opens Global Waitlist After $230M Seed

Abu Dhabi-based fintech startup Mal has opened a global waitlist for its AI-native Islamic finance platform. The launch came on a Sunday, three months after the company received in-principle approval from the UAE central bank. Mal was founded in 2025 by Abdallah Abu-Sheikh, an Emirati technology entrepreneur, and its expansion is backed by $230 million in seed funding — the largest publicly announced fintech seed investment in the Middle East and Africa.

Mal says artificial intelligence sits in its core architecture rather than being layered over older systems. The company argues this approach simplifies onboarding, payments, and financing decisions. It pairs that technology with Islamic financial principles, with plans for transparent pricing, open-market exchange rates, responsible financing, and cross-border financial services.

Abu-Sheikh, Mal's founder and CEO, says most financial services feel like a collection of disconnected products, not one connected customer experience. His company is trying to replace that fragmentation with a simpler, faster AI-native platform for people who use different providers to receive money, make payments, get financing, and invest.

Launching across markets

Mal intends to launch its first products in multiple markets at the same time. Planned offerings include global accounts for freelancers and international earners, AI-powered personal finance tools, lifestyle financing for shopping, travel, and education, and SME tools for handling operations and cash flow. The company says the design builds on more than 1,400 years of Islamic financial heritage.

Waitlist perks

Joining the waitlist gives early access to Mal's first products. Once members complete identity verification and activate their accounts, they also receive a joining bonus. Referrals can open Mal Club, which adds transfer fee savings, monthly rewards, cashback, travel and lifestyle offers, and priority access to new products.

The early-access strategy lets Mal build demand before its platform is live across markets. That same breadth raises the difficulty: a company founded in 2025 will be judged on how well one set of systems can meet local payment habits and regulations. The UAE approval, the technology, and $230 million in funding are meant to make that first move possible.

Mal is headquartered in Abu Dhabi. It describes its regulatory foundation, technology, and funding as the basis for international scaling.
