FAB Pushes Water Innovation Financing as UAE Startups Face Scale-Up Hurdles

First Abu Dhabi Bank and Soma Mater Management Consultancies convened water-technology startups and research institutions for a closed-door roundtable in Abu Dhabi on October 19 to examine financing and commercialization pathways for the sector. Roughly 20 representatives from water-innovation businesses, research bodies and other organizations attended. A joint statement issued Friday announced the meeting.

The session ran under FAB's SME Sustainability Programme and falls within the bank's $27.2 billion (AED 100 billion) blue-finance target for 2026–2035.

Much of the discussion dealt with the gap between a working prototype and a deployed product. Participants cited limited access to funding, limited access to pilot projects, limited access to procurement opportunities and thin supporting infrastructure as the barriers that keep emerging water technologies from reaching commercial scale.

They also worked through the segments where demand is clearest: water efficiency, wastewater reuse and climate adaptation, along with solutions that could reduce dependence on energy-intensive desalination. The framing was how banks, researchers and industry partners can move companies from technology development into larger-scale implementation. No new financing agreements, investment amounts or commercial contracts were disclosed.

FAB set out the blue-finance target on September 8, describing it as part of an existing $136.1 billion (AED 500 billion) sustainable-finance commitment running through 2030. The bank was the first financial institution in the Middle East and North Africa to sign the UN Sustainable Blue Economy Finance Principles, a framework for building water-related sustainability considerations into lending and investment decisions. By the end of June 2026 it had facilitated $107.5 billion (AED 395 billion) in sustainable and transition financing, or 79% of the wider commitment, and had issued $70 million in blue bonds for eligible water projects.

Timing matters here. The UAE is preparing to co-host the 2026 United Nations Water Conference with Senegal, scheduled for Abu Dhabi from December 8 to 10, which will bring governments, investors, businesses and researchers together. The United Nations estimates that about 2.1 billion people lack access to safely managed drinking water and about 3.4 billion lack safely managed sanitation. An outcome paper drawing on the roundtable is expected before the conference and is meant to map financing gaps and possible routes for water innovators into commercial markets.

FAB works across more than 20 markets and reported total assets of $384 billion (AED 1.41 trillion) at the end of June 2026. It placed ninth on a 2026 ranking of the region's 100 most valuable companies, with a market value of $56 billion at the January 31 cutoff, and Group Chief Executive Hana Al Rostamani took first place in the banking category of a 2026 sustainability leaders ranking. Soma Mater is a UAE consultancy working on food security, water security and the net-zero transition.

For the companies in the room, the unanswered questions are practical. FAB has not announced a specific funding allocation for the businesses involved, nor a timetable for converting the roundtable's recommendations into financing transactions. Whether participants go on to secure pilot opportunities, procurement agreements or financial backing is the measure that will show if the consultation changed anything.
